10 New Year security resolutions for businesses

Security threats are constantly evolving, so it’s important that businesses regularly review and update their physical security plans to ensure any risks are minimised.

Here are 10 steps to keeping your business secure in 2024:

  1. Conduct a comprehensive security audit

Before implementing any new security measures, review your current security systems and procedures to check they are still fit for purpose and whether any adjustments or enhancements are needed.

For example, look at access points, surveillance systems and lighting, as well as emergency response and business continuity plans.

Aim to do this annually (as a minimum) as regular assessments will help your business stay ahead of potential threats and ensure that your security is aligned with the evolving risks you face.

  1. Review your access control systems

Access control is one of the first lines of defence for any business and its premises, and the tools and technologies available to support it are advancing at pace. From biometric authentication that grants access based on fingerprints or even eye scans, to smart card readers and mobile access solutions, the options are becoming more and more sophisticated.

Depending on the size of your business and when and how access is required, it may be time for an upgrade. But at the very least, take this opportunity to review how your current access control systems are working. Do they need enhancing in any way? Are there any weak spots that need looking at?

  1. Look for blind spots in your coverage

Having alarms and CCTV installed on the premises can be a very effective deterrent but it’s important such systems are in full working order and that any blind spots are considered.

Traditional CCTV systems are also evolving fast – for example, they can now tap into the many capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) to form smart surveillance solutions. These types of systems can help detect unusual activities, identify potential security threats, and provide real-time alerts. With professional monitoring in place, you will be able to relax safe in the knowledge that intruders will be spotted early and a response mobilised, to minimise any risk of loss.

  1. Enhance lighting and visibility

Well-lit, open spaces can be a deterrent to criminals and help enhance overall safety. Evaluate how you might improve your outdoor and indoor lighting to eliminate blind spots and any hidden areas, including maintaining any plant life that may obscure views. Utilising modern LED lighting systems, this could not only help prevent criminal activities but also contribute to a safer and more secure environment for employees.

  1. Strengthen perimeter security

The perimeter of your business premises is another critical security area for controlling access and deterring unauthorised entry. Check that any physical barriers you have in place, such as fences and bollards, are in a good state of repair. See if there are any areas that might benefit from introducing further measures and strengthen your perimeter security accordingly.

  1. Review your Emergency Response plans

Emergency situations can arise unexpectedly and for all sorts of reasons. Having a well-defined emergency response plan is essential for reducing the potential impact of such events. Businesses should review and update their emergency response plans regularly to account for changes in personnel, facilities, or potential threats. Conducting drills and training sessions will also ensure that employees are familiar with any emergency procedures and can respond effectively in crisis situations.

  1. Give employees a security refresher

Depending on the size and type of business you operate there will be certain key habits and behaviours that employees can adopt, to help lessen the risk of problems occurring. It is wise to issue regular reminders to help keep secure working practices front of mind. For example, never leaving handbags on desks, or wallets in coats that are unattended for any length of time. Keeping tabs on all keys that are issued and ensuring they are stored safely. Challenging any strangers on site and never leaving visitors alone to wander the premises.

  1. Secure Data Storage and Disposal

Physical security ties closely to digital security and the protection of sensitive assets. Make sure your physical security personnel are working in tandem with your IT team to ensure there are no potential weaknesses. For example, if there is a break-in and computer equipment is stolen, what is the risk of information on that piece of equipment being compromised?

Businesses should also be using secure physical data storage areas and secure document disposal practices. This includes using locked cabinets for confidential files and partnering with reputable shredding services to ensure the secure destruction of sensitive documents.

  1. Link with the local community and police

Building strong relationships with your local police force and the local community can be valuable for enhancing physical security. See if there are any community crime programmes you can join. The sharing of information and knowledge can be helpful for creating a network of support, while promoting a safer environment for everyone.
