Operation Tornado tackles metal theft

This week has seen yet more cases of metal theft in our region with Stockbridge Primary School being one of the latest targets. Rain poured through the roof causing further damage inside and the lead theft was subsequently discovered on Monday. It’s believed this latest incident may be connected to the lead theft from the roof of King’s Somborne Primary School at the weekend.

The good news is that the number of reported metal thefts in Wiltshire has fallen dramatically since the start of an operation to tackle them across the country. ‘The number of reported metal thefts in Wiltshire during September 2012 was 77 - a reduction of 127 from September 2011 when 204 were logged. So far this month, 29 metal thefts have been reported - compared to 131 in January 2012.’*

Operation Tornado is a new multi-agency initiative, requiring those selling scrap metal to participating dealers to provide photographic proof of identity. In addition, cash payments for metal at recycling yards have recently been banned under new legislation.

The Association of Chief Police Officers estimates that metal theft costs the UK economy £770m per year. It’s evident from these figures and the ongoing local incidents hitting headlines daily that the battle against this crime will need to continue. However, the new measures in place to combat these criminals and reduce the cost of this epidemic are having a significantly positive effect.

There are additional preventative measures, which can be taken to deter potential thieves. These include:

  • Don’t leave scrap metal on display. Store it out of sight and preferably lock it away

  • Mark your property using an ultra-violet marker or DNA-based pen

  • Consider additional security measures such as PIR sensor lighting, CCTV and alarms. Venture Security provide an efficient response service to monitored alarm calls.

  • Cut back any trees and bushes which might shield a thief from view

  • Remove items that thieves could use to climb on to such as ladders bins

  • Make it difficult for thieves to gain access to your property - keep fences in good condition, restrict access and keep gates locked when not in use

  • If you see vehicles or people behaving suspiciously call the police

  • Ask neighbours to report any suspicious activity

  • Join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme

  • Farms or small holdings can join their local FarmWatch Scheme

  • Store valuable items in secure buildings with good quality doors and British Standard locks and windows

  • Park a vehicle in front of doors or gates overnight.
