Venture and our commitment to the armed forces

Something we have long been passionate about, here at Venture Security, is supporting the armed forces. In particular, the regulars, reservists and veterans who are keen to enter the security industry to forge a new career for themselves.

This passion can be seen embedded across the entire organisation; from our recruitment processes and the rich diversity of our team members, to the role we have played in managing security for some of the region’s largest and most prestigious military events. The Armed Forces Day national event held in Salisbury in 2019 being a major highlight.

Moving from the forces to a career in security

Venture is based in Andover and has a customer base that spans the central southern region, including Hampshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire. Using locally based team members and being within an area of the UK that has a high military population means the recruitment of forces personnel is something that has naturally become integrated within our operations.

Since being founded more than 15 years ago, many team members have joined us from a forces background – both on a permanent and casual basis - going on to become dedicated and valued members of the team.

Taking the leap to the security industry has been a natural step for many, who have found they have numerous transferable skills whilst also appreciating the camaraderie and teamwork element that a security role can provide. Alongside this, as a company we also work directly with many veterans on the client side of things too. Roles within facilities management and health and safety being another great ‘fit’ for those who previously specialised in these areas whilst serving.

The Armed Forces Covenant

In 2018, we decided to make a public pledge of our commitment to supporting the armed forces. We signed up to The Armed Forces Covenant alongside other individuals, communities and businesses in the UK who are actively trying to make a difference in this space.

By signing up to the covenant, we are demonstrating our commitment to those who serve, or who have served, and their families, and promise to do all we can to ensure they are treated fairly and are not disadvantaged.

How easy is it to move into a security job?

Whilst entering the security industry won’t be right for everyone, for many forces personnel it can be a career path they will find very rewarding and which makes use of their existing skills.

Some of the top qualities we see and value in those coming to us from a forces background, include:

  • Exceptional time keeping
  • Experience and understanding of the challenges of working nights and being away from home
  • Being highly adaptable, particularly when under pressure
  • Knowing how to look after themselves in any weather and the importance of this
  • Presenting themselves very well
  • Impeccable radio communication skills

Careers at Venture

In return for hard work, dedication and helping us provide the highest quality of security service possible, what we offer at Venture is comprehensive ongoing training and professional development, designed to support long term career aspirations. This is further supplemented by an industry-leading employee benefits scheme and competitive wages, with Venture also being accredited as a Living Wage employer.

There are a range of different security roles available and opportunities for career progression, depending on an individual’s preference for how and where they work. For example, our mobile patrol officers will work at night, independently and travel around visiting various customer sites, while our manned guarding teams will be based at a regular location and our event security team will work on an ad hoc basis at a range of different settings.
