Security officer commended for handling gun threat

At Venture, we recognise the valuable impact that our security officers are having, day-in-day-out, for customers across the region.

Due to the nature of their roles, our officers can sometimes find themselves facing incredibly stressful situations that may pose a threat to their personal safety. Despite this, they consistently go above and beyond, with a strong focus on preserving the safety of those around them.

It is for this reason that we introduced our ‘In the spirit of Venture’ initiative, which recognises and rewards such actions, as well as those individuals who are consistently praised by our customers. The latest officer to receive such recognition is Niyi.

Remaining calm in the face of a threatening situation

Niyi works as a static security officer for a hostel run by Winchester City Council that offers temporary accommodation for homeless adults.

During his shift, Niyi became aware of some suspicious behaviour. A resident had accessed the property via a fire exit and when confronted by Niyi, was extremely aggressive and went on to threaten him with what appeared to be a gun.

Despite this, Niyi remained remarkably calm and was able to alert the police and wider security team to the incident. Niyi’s handling of the situation helped minimise the potential risk for other residents and staff. Following an investigation by the police, the resident was thankfully found not to be in possession of a live firearm, but rather an imitation handgun. Evidence gathered by Niyi, including his statement and high-quality footage from his body worn video camera, enabled the police to charge the resident and he is due to appear in court for the offence.

Our thanks to Niyi

Paul Howe, Venture Security’s MD, commented: “We have been so impressed by Niyi. His efforts in handling the individual in question were exceptional, especially when faced with such an alarming situation. His ability to remain calm under pressure and to take the appropriate action was incredible.

“Working as a security officer can feel like a thankless task at times. We want our officers to know we appreciate just how challenging their roles can be and how much we value their ongoing efforts. While we expect high standards from every one of our officers at all times, ‘In the spirit of Venture’ commendations are for those individuals who have gone the extra mile and are deserving of a special recognition for their actions.”
