Description

CCTV Operators play an important role in protecting people, property and public spaces. The role requires concentration, attention to detail, effective communication and the ability to identify, assess and respond appropriately to incidents as they develop.

This course is designed for individuals looking to begin a career as a CCTV Operator and gain the qualification required to apply for an SIA Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence.

The course combines tutor-led learning, practical surveillance exercises and formal assessment to develop the knowledge and skills required to work effectively within a CCTV control room environment.

Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of:

  • The role and responsibilities of a CCTV Operator
  • The legal and regulatory framework surrounding CCTV and public space surveillance
  • Data protection, privacy and confidentiality
  • Operating CCTV equipment and surveillance systems
  • Monitoring public spaces and maintaining effective surveillance
  • Identifying and assessing activities and incidents
  • Recognising suspicious or unusual behaviour
  • Responding appropriately to incidents and emergencies
  • Recording and reporting information accurately
  • Communicating effectively with colleagues, control rooms and emergency services
  • Professional standards, ethics and information security

Learners will also develop practical surveillance skills through realistic exercises, helping them build the confidence, concentration and attention to detail required to operate CCTV systems effectively.

Successful learners will achieve the Highfield Level 2 Award for Working as a CCTV Operator (Public Space Surveillance) within the Private Security Industry, allowing them to progress to an application for an SIA Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence, subject to meeting the SIA's other licensing requirements.

Assessment

Learners will complete formal examinations and practical assessments throughout the qualification to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and practical CCTV skills.

Assessment includes:

  • Knowledge-based examinations covering the mandatory course units.
  • Practical CCTV surveillance assessment.
  • Practical exercises assessing the learner's ability to monitor, identify and respond appropriately to incidents.
  • Assessment of the learner's ability to record and communicate information accurately.

Assessments are completed under controlled conditions and learners must successfully meet the required assessment criteria to achieve the qualification.

Your trainer will guide you through each assessment and provide opportunities to practise the required knowledge and practical CCTV skills throughout the course.

Prerequisites

Before booking this course, learners must ensure they meet the following entry requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or over.
  • Meet the SIA's eligibility requirements for applying for a front-line Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English, including reading, writing and speaking.
  • Be able to participate fully in the classroom training, practical surveillance exercises and assessments.
  • Bring acceptable photographic identification and any documentation required by the training provider.

No previous CCTV or security experience is required.

Please note: completing the qualification does not automatically grant an SIA licence. Learners must apply directly to the Security Industry Authority and meet its eligibility and licensing requirements.
