Description
The Security Officer Refresher qualification is designed for existing SIA Security Guard licence holders who need to complete the required refresher training to renew their licence.
The course refreshes the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely, lawfully and professionally as a Security Officer, while addressing key areas of current security practice.
Learners will refresh their knowledge and understanding of:
- Conducting lawful and effective search procedures
- Different types of searches and appropriate searching techniques
- Protecting vulnerable people and recognising safeguarding concerns
- Understanding terror threats and the role of the security operative
- Responding appropriately to security incidents and emergencies
- Current responsibilities, legislation and industry best practice
Successful learners will achieve the Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Refresher), allowing them to meet the training requirement to renew their SIA Security Guard licence, subject to meeting the SIA's other licensing requirements.

Assessment
Your qualification includes a combination of knowledge-based and practical assessments. You’ll be given opportunities to practise throughout the course, with guidance from your trainer to help you prepare for each assessment. You will need access to a smartphone, tablet or laptop with a reliable internet connection to complete the required pre-learning and course examination.
Prerequisites
Before booking this course, learners must ensure they meet the following entry requirements:
- Hold a current SIA Security Guard licence, or have held one that expired within the last 3 years.
- Complete all mandatory pre-course self-study before attending.
- Be able to communicate effectively in English, including reading, writing and speaking.
- Bring acceptable photographic identification and any documentation required by the training provider.
- Be physically able to safely participate in the practical search assessment.
If your Security Guard licence expired more than 3 years ago, you will normally be required to complete the full Security Officer qualification rather than the Refresher course.
