This month marks a significant milestone for one of our most valued community partnerships. The Winchester BID Rangers scheme celebrates its seven year anniversary.
Since launching, the scheme has formed a key part of the Winchester Business Crime Reduction Partnership (WBCRP), and Winchester BID’s wider approach to local business crime reduction and public safety.
We’re proud to have been involved from the very beginning. Our dedicated and highly trained officers, who serve as BID Rangers, play a valuable role in making Winchester city centre a safer and more welcoming environment, for businesses, residents and visitors.
Over the past seven years, our team has:
- Recovered over £113,000 worth of stolen goods for local businesses
- Deterred anti-social behaviour and supported vulnerable individuals
- Built strong relationships with retailers, hospitality venues, and public services
- Worked hand-in-hand with Hampshire Constabulary, Winchester City Council and other key agencies to ensure a joined-up approach to safety
Whether it’s patrolling the high street, responding to incidents, providing first-aid, or offering a visible and reassuring presence during busy periods, the Rangers are a trusted part of daily life in Winchester.
We’re especially proud of the impact our officers, including Brett and Charlie (pictured), are having. Their professionalism, empathy, and commitment to the community are what has made this scheme such a success.
Having been part of the Ranger team for five years, Brett, in particular, has become a
familiar and trusted face. His professionalism and dedication have not gone unnoticed. He’s received multiple commendations, including recognition from Hampshire Constabulary and the National Association of Business Crime Partnerships for his outstanding contribution to community safety.
He was also awarded the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Award for Business Crime Prevention, recognising his outstanding contribution to supporting local policing, reducing business crime, and improving community safety.
Reflecting on the scheme’s success, Paul Howe, Managing Director at Venture, said:
“The Winchester BID Rangers scheme is a brilliant example of what can be achieved
through public-private partnerships and how they can deliver real, measurable benefits.
“We’re incredibly proud of the role our officers play in supporting the local business
community and making Winchester a safer and inviting place for everyone who lives, works, and visits the city. Seven years on, the impact speaks for itself, and we’re excited to continue building on that success.”
Ryan Keen, Winchester Neighbourhood Police Sergeant, said:
“Having worked in the city for the past two years, I’ve been continually impressed by the dedication and unwavering support of Winchester’s BID Rangers with the Police and the city as a whole. Their presence is a cornerstone of the city’s safety and vibrancy. The collaborative spirit they foster is a key reason Winchester remains a welcoming place to live, work, and visit. Though their efforts often go unnoticed, the impact they make particularly in addressing anti-social behaviour and crime is commendable and worthy of praise.”
Sandra Tuddenham, Winchester City Council Community Safety Manager:
“As frontline officers, the BID Rangers face many different scenarios within the city centre. I’m pleased to be able to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work and dedication, they undertake a key role in the delivery of the community safety partnership’s duty to reduce crime and disorder”.
