Located on Salisbury Plain, Stonehenge is one of the best-known prehistoric monuments in Europe. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, around 1.5 million people visit the iconic landmark each year.
Following a competitive tender earlier this year, Venture Security is now providing static guarding for the monument around the clock, as well as security for the onsite visitor centre. Additionally, the specialist team is delivering comprehensive security services for four popular events held at the site throughout the year. These are the summer and winter solstices, as well as two equinoxes held in spring and autumn, which up to 15,000 people will typically attend.
Jennifer Davies, head of historic properties at English Heritage, commented: “When we put the contract out to tender, we were really impressed by the team at Venture Security. We could see that they understood the significance of the assignment and had the experience and dedication needed to deliver it.
“The fact Venture knows the area very well and uses locally based team members was really appealing. Plus they have extensive experience in crowd management and handling security for high profile public events, so they tick all the boxes for us.”
Venture’s guarding team at Stonehenge is made up of 12 SIA licensed security officers, with additional team members joining to support the security detail for the quarterly events as required.
Paul Howe, Venture Security managing director, commented: “We’re delighted to be working with English Heritage and to be looking after such an iconic site as Stonehenge. It’s a privilege to be entrusted with protecting a monument of such historic interest, ensuring it is preserved for generations to come.”
Venture Security, based in Andover, provides specialist security services to local authorities, corporate and residential customers based across Hampshire, Wiltshire and central, southern England. The company is ranked within the top 1% of UK security providers.
For facilities management teams, security remains a top priority, as crime levels but also ‘terror attacks’ and other events, continue to highlight the importance of having a comprehensive security strategy in place.
Salisbury Cathedral has historically had as issue with anti-social behaviour within the grounds, especially during the summer months. This led to the management team calling on the services of Venture, to help manage the issue for the benefit of visitors, staff and local residents.
We are delighted to announce that Venture Security are the first organisation to be accredited by Wiltshire Police under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS). As of Saturday 24th August 2019, our accredited security officers will now have low level police powers to help tackle anti-social behaviour within Salisbury City Centre.
