Situation

The city of Winchester in Hampshire attracts more than four million visitors each year. With a thriving business district, bustling shopping streets and numerous eateries and seasonal events on offer, the city is a popular destination for local residents and tourists alike. Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) has been in operation since April 2008 and delivers a range of services and initiatives designed to support local businesses.

Task

A key focus for Winchester BID is effective street management, which is integral to showcasing Winchester as a safe and attractive place to work, live, shop and visit. Antisocial behaviour is a common problem within any town and city centre location. As well as being unpleasant for residents and visitors, it has the potential to adversely impact on footfall, local retailers and more broadly, the reputation of the area.

Action

Venture has previously worked with Winchester BID providing security. Impressed by the results and with Venture’s fully trained and accredited security professionals, the team was enlisted by Winchester BID to carry out daily patrols of the city centre. The Winchester BID Rangers support the organisation’s commitment to providing a safer environment, while helping to reduce low level crime and antisocial behaviour.

Services Venture Security currently provides:

City centre patrols are carried out by fully trained Community Safety Accredited (CSAS) and Security Industry Authority (SIA) licenced Rangers seven days a week
The patrols cover the whole Winchester BID area, which includes more than 700 local businesses
The Rangers wear smart uniforms and are equipped with body cameras and other specialist equipment

Results

The highly visible presence of the Rangers is helping to minimise crime and antisocial behaviour, while offering reassurance to visitors and residents alike
The Rangers provide frontline customer service, handling situations as they arise, acting as a deterrent and supporting the frontline emergency services
Venture’s Rangers liaise between all partner organisations, including the local council and police, to support Winchester BID in achieving its objectives and ensuring strong lines of communication are open
Feedback received from local businesses, residents and visitors alike has been very positive

The Rangers are playing an important role in the city, being a welcoming presence on the street, whilst supporting the many businesses and helping to keep our city safe.
